Recently, I checked out a new-ish fine food shop in Hayes Valley called Gourmet & More. I’d heard about it from my French community friends, who have raved about the cheese room. The storefront is so unassuming, I realized I had been walking right by the shop for months. Inside, I found many European treats Mr. Cheesemonger and I miss from France—-sweet sirops to flavor our beverages, crème de marrons (chestnut spread), boudin noir (blood sausage) . . . there was so much deliciousness in that small space!
There’s a little seating area in the back, and I think I even spied an open-air section.
And then there was the cheese room. The cheesemonger, Eilis, gave me some great stuff to taste. There is definitely a great selection, much of it European. You can’t beat presentation like this. I was literally surrounded by cheese. The room is cool, so I was glad I had my jacket with me. I was going to an opera or something afterward, so I couldn’t take any home with me, but next time . . . . I am so glad to have this little corner of French gourmandise nearby! Sorry for the lack of photos. I was too busy poking around.
