For the past couple of weeks, Miss Cheesemonger has been in Germany visiting with friends, seeing lots of operas, touring the Christmas markets, and eating as much cheese as possible. I lingered over my first hot mug of gluhwein while touring the Christmas markets at night, feasted on blood sausage for breakfast, and chomped on lots of pretzels.
My first taste of cheese in Germany was a specialty local to Frankfurt—handkäse mit Musik. This traditional recipe consists of small rounds of fresh cheese which are then marinated in a mixture of oil, vinegar, caraway seeds, and chopped onions. What delicious welcome to this beautiful city! I loved it. I love vinegar and onions anyway, and the slightly sour cheese married so well with the rest of the ingredients. The caraway seeds provided an excellent foil to the other sour ingredients.
I only realized after devouring my serving that I’d forgotten to take photos.
Up next, Christmas markets!
