A French-American Cheese Tasting For A Good Cause || Une Dégustation Franco-Américaine Pour Une Bonne Cause

Hello, my friends! The Fancy Food Show wrapped up this week after 3 nonstop days of specialty food There are always lots of gourmet events happening around the city during this time period, and this year, I decided to join folks at the Cheese School of SF for a fundraiser supporting the Daphne Zepos Teaching Award. The event featured 12 cheeses from 12 different makers—6 from the United States and 6 from France. They were paired off around the main tasting room, one French cheese to an American counterpart. There was wine and beer, and lots of cheese.

If you’re not already familiar with Daphne Zepos and her work, you can read more about her life and work online. She was an impassioned cheese advocate, affineur, educator, and expert on fine cheeses who, sadly, passed away too soon in 2012. She helped found the Essex Street Cheese Company, a renowned fine cheese importer and wholesaler in New York. She was a co-owner of the Cheese School of San Francisco. She taught people all over the States and throughout the world about the beauty, complexity, and wonder of cheese for her whole cheese career.

To honor her memory and help continue her cheese education work, the Daphne Zepos Teaching Award is bestowed upon one cheese industry person a year. That award winner has the opportunity to travel and learn about traditional cheese making, then share their findings at the annual American Cheese Society Conference.

As for the event, well, we were there for Daphne. We met some fine French cheese folks, and tasted some good French and American cheeses. On the list (French cheeses on the left):

Accompanying each pair of cheeses was a condiment from Friend in Cheeses Jam Co. in California. I particularly liked the Smokin’ Padron Jam and Carrot Marmalade!

Let’s cheese the night away.

Bonjour, mes amis !

. . . peut-être la prochaine fois ?
