Things To Do In and Around Point Reyes, California

Hello, my friends! Phew, it’s been a busy week. The SF Cheese Fest took place on Saturday, and I’m on my way to a week of vacaaaation in Puerto Rico and Miami!

This week on the blog, though, we’re off to explore the environs of San Francisco. My friend, baker extraordinaire Megan (remember her panna cotta and matcha ice cream profiterole recipes?), and I went out to Point Reyes National Seashore last week. It was her first time! I had just been there the previous week, but this is one of my favorite places, and I didn’t mind. Here’s a little list of things I love to do when I’m in the area for the day.

Things to see at the Seashore and vicinity:

Point Reyes Lighthouse: Come for sweeping views of the sea and craggy cliffs, glimpses of sea animals, and, of course, the lighthouse. 27999 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Inverness, CA 94937. Thurs.-Mon. 10am-4:30pm.

I love being near water, don’t you?

The Tule Elk Reserve: You may very well see lots of Tule elk. Their regal stature and imposing antlers are absolutely humbling. Bring your binoculars and your camera! Visit this website for more information.

Limantour Beach: Who doesn’t love visiting the beach as part of a hike? See how to get there on the National Park Service website.

Hanging out with Megan on Limantour Beach!

Kayak at Tomales Bay: M. Cheesemonger and I both love the water, and kayaking along the picturesque bay is a great way to work up an appetite for the local oysters! M. Cheesemonger and I tend to go with Blue Waters Kayaking. They even have bioluminescence tours.

Bicycle: everywhere. See where to bike on the National Park Service website.

Another possible activity: horseback riding.

Food

Marin Sun Farms: One of my friends had recommended this place to me for their high quality meats. When I tried it, I ordered the lamb burger with lamb bacon. Good Lord—the ensemble was so succulent and flavorful! It was the best burger I’ve had in a long time! Their meats are excellent, so buy some to take home with you. 10905 Shoreline Hwy, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. Fri., Sat., Sun.: 11am-8pm. Monday and Thursday: 11am-5pm. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Post-hike lamb burger with lamb bacon! YUMMM.

Hog Island Oysters: No big deal–just the open sky surrounded by nature, delicious oysters, and a few of your best friends. Reservation required for the picnic and oyster bar areas. 20215 Shoreline Hwy, Marshall, CA 94940. Open 7 days a week, 9am-5pm (retail), 10am-5pm (picnic areas), Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday 11am-4:30pm (the Boat Oyster Bar).

A dozen fresh oysters? Yep.

Palace Market: This grocery store offers a great selection of local cheeses! PLUS, you can get a cone of buffalo milk gelato and soft serve at the back. Really, the soft serve alone is enough to draw me in. 11300 CA-1, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956 Open 7 days a week, 8am-9pm.

Get the buffalo milk soft serve and gelato!

The Bovine Bakery: I always have to get a fluffy, voluminous scone from this local bakery. It’s always packed with bicyclists passing through, especially on the weekends. I have had less luck with their croissants than their scones, though. 11315 CA-1, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. Monday-Friday: 6:30am-5pm. Saturday, Sunday: 7am-5pm.

Point Reyes is so pretty!

Cowgirl Creamery: It’s practically a ritual for M. Cheesemonger and me to come by Cowgirl Creamery to grab some salads and sandwiches before heading off to a trail for the day. Their prepared food is excellent, and you can see wheels of Red Hawk aging through large, plate glass windows. 80 4th St, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. Wednesday-Sunday: 10am-6pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Don’t forget to stop by Cowgirl Creamery!

Shopping:

Ah yes, even if I don’t buy things all that often, I still like to LOOK.

Coyuchi: This home linen store in Point Reyes Station is nearly my idea of heaven. Organic cotton spun into the must beautiful subtle hues, sometimes embroidered with fetching details—I showed the shop to Megan last week, and she walked out with a gorgeous new sheet set. They have table linens, but really shine with the bed linens and blankets! There are even items for children’s rooms. 11101 CA-1 #201, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. Open 7 days a week, 10am-5pm.

Yeaaahh, this is probably my favorite place in town. Coyuchi!

Toby’s Feed Barn: You’ll find little gifts, local specialty food, fresh local flowers, and art gallery. There are many cute items for the kitchen and home. You can also hold events here! 11250 CA-1, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. Monday-Saturday: 9am-5pm. Sunday: 10am-5pm.

Getting some fresh flowers at Toby’s.

Several other cute boutiques line the main road in Point Reyes Station. While I have visited several, I’ve never purchased anything from them. Do browse, though! You might even get to see the local firefighters working out with their gear.

Another day, another workout at the fire house in Point Reyes.
