Hello everyone! M. Cheesemonger and I are preparing to leave tomorrow on yet another trip, this time for my college reunion near Boston, then New York City! I’m excited, but just barely over our last travels! It’s going to be AWESOME, though! There are lots of cheesy things in store for us, and you, in the next few weeks!
I’m just going to close our Italy trip, then, with this final blog post. M. Cheesemonger and I rented an adorable Fiat 500 to drive along the Amalfi coast, and saw many breathtaking views of the bay and craggy landscape. We loved every bit of it, even if the weather was less than sunny on one of the days.
This part of the trip was particularly memorable, not just for the scenery, but for the animals and the delicious food! We had been partaking of the region’s abundant seafood nonstop, but decided to go for a pizza one evening. A small beachside restaurant in Atrani (next to Amalfi) had one topped with gorgonzola dolce, mozzarella, and walnuts. We’d had a lot of tomato sauce lately, so we were sold. I’m going to have to remember this for future reference—gorgonzola dolce and mozzarella melted together are HEAVENLY. It was the perfect combination—flavorful, but gooey, leaving both of us wanting more.
The other amazing, animal, surprises involved mules and goats!! The mules were pretty fascinating. I was wondering how towns like Amalfi and Atrani get construction done, since there are no streets for most of the towns, only steps and narrow walkways. Then, we saw three mules being loaded with roof tiles, and led up a stairway to a construction site. Ah ha! Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways!
Later, as we were driving in the hills on a small road to return to Napoli, we saw a mass moving toward us. It was two large shepherding dogs leading a herd of goats along the road! Everyone looked happy, and the shepherd even paused from coaxing the goats along to say, “Buongiorno,” to us as he walked past. That moment pretty much made my trip!

I attended an opera at the Palazzo Reale di Napoli, through the city’s main opera, the Teatro di San Carlo. If you love lavish settings and beautiful music, it’s worth visiting!
