Travels: Visiting Kauai, Hawaii

Hello, my friends! Phew, It is tech week for my current show, and I had 3 very amazing photo sessions, so the blog kind of fell by the wayside for a few days there. I have a little bit of time to write now, though, so I wanted to share some things about the second part of our little getaway to Hawaii, on the island of Kauai.

Before heading over, M. Cheesemonger and I looked at the possibility of visiting Kauai Kunana Dairy, but they only give tours on Mondays, when we weren’t going to be there. Oh well, it was to be a week without cheese, then!

Basically, we spent the whole week like these turtles in the video that M. Cheesemonger made, visiting Tunnels and Haena beaches. I LOVE SNORKELING, so this was the best area for me:

We stayed along the north shore to avoid crowds as much as we could. Generally, the food options were pretty no-frills, but still good.

The Bistro

2484 Keneke St, Kilauea, HI 96754, 7/7 12pm-9pm, (808) 828-0480

I was on a Kauai shrimp kick, so we had to get the local prawns with risotto. Alll the seafoooood!!

At The Bistro, we loved the Kauai prawns with saffron risotto, goat cheese, leeks, and asparagus so much, we ordered it twice. All of the other dishes we ordered there were also wonderful, including the ahi poke, calamari, and sweet potato fries.

Kalypso Island Bar & Grill

5-5156 Kuhio Hwy, Ste G, Hanalei, HI 96714, Mon-Fri: 11am-9pm, Sat/Sun: 8am-9pm, (808) 826-9700

Even though it was busy, we were seated pretty quickly at Kalypso. Our food (a kalua pork sandwich and fish sandwich) was satisfying after a morning spent swimming, and the ambiance was pretty peppy.

Foodland

5-4280 Kuhio Hwy, Princeville, HI 96722, 7/7 6am-11pm

Because I don’t think you need a photo of a grocery store, here’s the ocean.

Yes, the grocery store. There, we found some excellent poke to take home, and local kombucha on tap! There are also bulk foods and some locally caught seafood. Prices are so elevated on Kauai, though, that we found that much of the time, it was more economical to eat out.

Java Kai

4-1384 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746, 7/7 6am-7pm, (808) 823-6887

Some coffee love at Java Kai.

With good coffee and a bit of a hipster feel, along with a really adorable attached clothing boutique, we found Java Kai worth a visit.

El Rey del Mar

4-1638 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746, Thurs-Tues 7am-7pm

The view at El Rey del Mar, minus M. Cheesemonger for you, probably.

This little food truck serves up copious, fresh, flavorful Mexican fare. M. Cheesemonger’s soft shell crab burrito and my shrimp burrito were both wonderful. If only we had discovered this little spot sooner!

Non-Food + Non Swimming

I did manage to find myself a new bathing suit! Living in SF, I find it pretty much impossible to find a great swimsuit, probably because it’s so cold here. I’ve been trying to find the “perfect” suit for about 8 years, and finally, it may have happened at Bikini 808 Hawaii, this tiny shop bringing Brazilian bikinis to Hanalei. The owner was wonderful! She pointed me to exactly what I needed with some expert bikini skill. You can find it at 5120 Kuhio Highway, Hanalei, HI 96714.

Our other “big” discovery was of the Princeville Botanical Gardens. We took one of their guided tours, and saw many beautiful flowers, fruits, bees, and trees. Just look! 3840 Ahonui Place, Princeville, HI, 96722. 808.634.5505 for reservations.

From walking around Kauai.

Ahh, it as good to take a little break! Next week, we’re back to cheese!
