An Art Break In San Francisco: Bouquets To Art At The De Young Museum

Hello, my friends! Phew, this past week has been busy with lots of photo shoots, so I’m ready to give my mind a little rest. An artistic rest, let’s say.

Once a year, for about one week at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, there is an exhibit called “Bouquets to Art.” Florists from all over the area are invited to create a floral design based on one piece of art. The pieces vary from year to year, and many florists come to discuss their work with awed museum visitors.

Hunt Littlefield, Neil Hunt. Painting: unidentified artist; Robert, Calvin, Martha, and William Scott and Mila.

I remember my first time at “Bouquets to Art,” and thought it was absolutely stunning! What a beautiful way to pay homage to these gorgeous artworks, flowers, artists, and culture. The arrangements varied from minimalist and modern, to lush and romantic. Since then, I have tried to attend every year.

This year, with an exhibition called “Revelations: Art from the African American South” taking place at the same time as “Bouquets to Art,” these florists had the chance to create some powerful, activist floral works in addition to works to accompany landscapes or still lifes. The exhibition and the accompanying floral pieces were all so engaging, challenging, and provocative. I feel like the flowers made me and others stop to consider these pieces in a new way.
